Polycystic ovary syndrome - irregular periods

There are several ways to control irregular and/or heavy periods if you have PCOS. these include:

  • Maintaining a normal weight - for women who are overweight, weight loss is the main treatment for PCOS. It also improves all the other symptoms of the condition.
  • The contraceptive pill
  • Cyclical hormone tablets - known as progestogens
  • The Mirena IUS

You need to have around 6 cycles per year to prevent cancer of the lining of the womb.
