Insulin-sensitising drugs - metformin
Metformin is a drug that has been used in diabetes for some time, which may be useful for some women with PCOS. Metformin:
- Does not result in significant weight loss or effect on hirsutism
- When combined with fertility treatments can improve the chances of success
- May be prescribed if you have diabetes in association with PCOS
- May be less useful for women who are very overweight
Research is still continuing into the role of metforin and similar drugs. One thing that is clear from the research so far is that women who lost weight through diet and exercise experienced the most benefit.
